Raven Stones

Ravenstones is a superb seldom visited crag with a fine outlook overlooking Standing Stones and Saddleworth Moor. The crag faces north and west, catching the late afternoon and evening sun. The rock itself is excellent quality moorland grit, if a little green at times. It could be worth abseiling down routes which have had few ascents and which rely on crucial holds to give them a gentle brush, removing the worst of the greenery. Fortunately many of the routes rely on a brutal approach for an ascent, so lichen is oft the least of your worries. The crag has some seepage down its main drainage lines and should be given sometime to dry after a prolonged wet spell. There is an excellent collection of lower grade routes with some equally fine offerings in the mild extreme grades. Even one or two for the aspirant hardman and the odd unclimbed line to boot.

Approach: park at Binn Green underneath Alderman Rocks. Follow the path down the steps that leads out of the bottom of the car park. At the bottom of the steps follow the road left down to the reservoirs. At the bottom follow the track left leading up the left hand side of the valley and the left side of the reservoir. The track steepens up after the final reservoir is reached. Ravenstones can now be seen on the right skyline at the head of the valley. Continue along the track until it ends at the head of the valley and a tunnel can be seen heading off into the hillside (this emerges at Dovestones edge, but not on a wet day). At this point it is possible to strike directly up the hillside following a faint path up the ridge which zig zags back and forth until Ravenstones is reached. Approx 1 hour 30 mins on foot, an hour by bike. It is possible to lock your bike to the iron ladder above the tunnel entrance. An alternative approach is possible via the Standing Stones lay by. Though this method does leave a some what intimidating walkout at the end of the day, stamina required.
